Top ten movies of all time?
« on: January 12, 2019, 03:52:57 am »
This is pretty hard for me to be honest! I am counting trilogies/sagas as one as noted to make it easier. Maybe something like...

10. Phantom of the Opera

9. Eastern Promises

8. Dracula

7. The Number 23

6. Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition

5. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

4. Man of Steel Trilogy

3. Fight Club

2. A Cure for Wellness

1. Watchmen Ultimate Cut

Top ten for what purpose?

One's personal enjoyment? Advancing an individual's understanding of the world? Promoting greater imagination and inspiration about possibilities for the future? Comprehending the "in-jokes" of cinema when watching future movies that refer to them?

Each of those questions might be answered by a different list, and I wonder what question your list answers.

That's why my list was so hard haha. I was trying to think of them from all those categories. For instance, Eastern Promises is my favorite crime drama. Cure for Wellness my favorite horror/thriller. #23 is very nostalgic. Phantom of the Opera I watch rarely but I love the story and the themes, even if more than the film. Fight Club and Watchmen had huge impacts on my life.

Aha. I have personally always preferred the literary Phamtom of the Opera to its film instances. I've consumed Dracula and LOTR as strings of words rather than pictures before as well. Do you think that the movie adaptations of classic literature made your list solely for their merit as stories, or because the filmmaking adds something that was absent from the books?

If the latter, I'm curious how you'd characterize that "something" which gets added or enhanced by the transition from the page to the screen.
