Journals / Desire Lines and Trap Streets
« on: December 10, 2017, 02:33:11 pm »
I sometimes think we are choking on a surfeit of maps. I come back to cartography again as the quintessential metaphor for ceremonial/grimoire/book magic. We rely on the integrity of maps to get around unfamiliar territory yet there are no maps that don’t distort and give a misleading, even partisan, view of the territory (Google “Galls-Peters projection” for hours of controversial fun, or my favourite “trap streets” [spoiler, a trap street is a fake street that a cartographer inserts into a map]). “All maps distort reality and convey bias (whether deliberately or not)” (
So this is a hymn of praise to Desire Lines “spontaneous new trails shaped by pedestrians effectively voting with their feet” ( They represent the true and ancient act of resistance which paradoxically becomes the road most travelled. “In Europe and the Middle East, ancient sunken lanes known as ‘holloways‘ (or: hollow ways) represent a particularly extreme expression of the desire path phenomenon. Many of these semi-subterranean routes have formed over hundreds or even thousands of years, eventually appearing more like a tunnel than a pathway” (ibid). Sometimes the “magic[k]” of a thing requires no further commentary.

It's perfect! Now lets conjure it and see if it eats our brains...

Rogue and King
I'm grateful to you both for “popping in”. I’m excrementally awful at using this particular medium, so it's a pleasure to know I’m talking with someone outside my own pate!
“Make your own language” and indeed “creating your own magickal tech” is exactly it. It’s not that I’m hostile to “dead languages” or imaginary languages or indeed anything that works to disenthrall. If it works for you it works. It’s more that I’m persuaded that we are living in occupied territory in which there is a denial and suppression of what emerges from the immediacy of our own individual perceptions and a co-optation of our self-actualization . Remember Nietzsche’s “philosophy with a hammer”, well I’m favouring the rather more bathetic “philosophy with a can opener”; a prosaic item that only serves to extricate!
So yes “make your own language”, “create your own magickal tech”, do it personally and as a Dasein. For me that embarks from what is most “real” in your personal lived experience and journeys outward. Increasingly a magic stripped back to a visceral immediacy, which can “invoke” the mute things it interpellates.
I was going to witter on about an existential restatement of the doctrine of signatures and
Adam naming the animals in the Kabbalah, but that rather defeats my point (please psychically insert whatever emoji conveys self-depreciating humour).

General LHP Discussion / Two methods of magic[k]al defense.
« on: November 26, 2017, 11:58:51 am »
Thought I'd share two methods of magic[k]al defense that I've road tested.
ONE: Take a phrase that has been in your brain for a long time (a mindworm, if you will). Its apparent meaning is not particularly important, but I believe its longevity is (my phrase came from a Sam Beckett work, and has been hanging around my cranium for more than thirty years). Turn the phrase into a sigil. If this resembles an object or person so much the better.
Chances are this mindworm has become part of your psychological microbiota. It has an interest in the welfare of its host (you) and by sigilizing it you can summon it to do what it is its interest to do anyway, defend you. Use the sigil in the way appropriate to its form. If it is just a squiggle write it on the interloper, if it looks like a thing use that thing. It will restrain and inhibit an intrusion.
TWO: Modern life is full of boredom, waiting and frustration (a doctor’s waiting room, an airport when your flight is delayed, the average office on the average day). If you live at the beginning of the twenty-first century chances are your experience of this will be viscerally real to you, it will have psychological  “substance”. I describe this substance to myself as the “dead weight of mundanity/modernity”. And because of its lived reality this substance can be conceptualized and utilized. When you are experiencing an unwelcome approach (or “attack”) you can conceptually tie/glue/attach this dead weight to the encroaching force/entity and restrain and repulse it.
I used both in tandem recently and found them to work. They should be compatible with most systems.
Regarding TWO I should add that if an individual understands musical notation it should be possible to sigilize a longstanding earworm.

General LHP Discussion / The Black Flame Tarot
« on: November 09, 2017, 05:08:48 pm »
Is anyone aware of the Black Flame Tarot Deck? ? Its creators describe it thus: "The Black Flame Tarot is a magical work featuring hand-drawn pieces inspired by Setian Black magical themes, Art Nouveau paintings, and feminine demonic currents. Also drawing ideas from other esoteric schools, the Black Flame Tarot is a useful divinatory tool for personal growth and pathways to sovereignty".

General LHP Discussion / Re: Synchronicity
« on: November 04, 2017, 01:46:30 pm »
I had not intended the above post to serve as an invocation. However since posting it the coincidences have been flowing thick and fast.
Two of the less convoluted examples.
I casually mention Husserl as psychopomp in a journal entry here. Later I receive an e-mail link to an obituary for the late Mark Fisher (at ) and find on the same site “On the Horror of Phenomenology: Lovecraft and Husserl”. Then I select “Leviathan Rots” to read on the same site and at the same moment the background TV antiques programme weirdly decides to give a potted history of Thomas Hobbes!
And thus it continues. I am listening to a Radio 4 programme which includes an interview with a local academic. I look up an entirely unconnected subject on google and the first thing I am presented with is one of said academics books.
I can virtually guarantee if I go to a bookcase and select a book at random something connected will appear post haste...

Chaos Magic seems to have arrived at an odd point in its existence. It began offering for itself an expansive context as being pragmatically “above” context. However its environment is the collapse of meaning and the degradation of language. Its milieu is the aeon of “truthiness”, that presentiment of rightness, that plenitude of feeling that “it should be true”. Its context is dispossession, the ceding of symbolic efficiency. Its context is giving ground till no clod is left for a foothold. Thus it has become deferential mimicry Magic conducted on occupied territory so as not to trouble a corpulent Occupier who is bloated with their own sense of entitlement.
Capitalism ate Chaos Magic whole and didn’t even bother to spit out the pips. The Chaos Magic that was supposed to usher in a "meta-paradigm" has become just another commodity, a “breakdown of any coherent sense of temporality” flavoured lollipop (with a dayglow sigil on the stick).
How do you do magic in a time of deceased language, departed imagination?

Is the answer more important than the question? When we posit the answer is it only to resolve the problem of the indeterminate, the incomprehensible and the unassimilable and deliver the Self from psychological and existential crisis?
The LHP is surely a way of NOT “knowing one's place”. It is the determined demurral to be assigned a position or rank, especially an inferior one. It is a positive alienation, a refusal of imposed identity. It is transgressive about the basic construction of reality and resistant to a settled field of meaning.
The LHP surely doesn’t require us to be 'Apes of God'; imitators of the given order, parrots of the Weltanschauung or to believe too easily in any set of presuppositions. “I MUST Create a System, or be enslav’d by another Man’s; /I will not Reason and Compare: my business is to Create” (William Blake, Jerusalem, f. 10, ll. 20–1.)

I have real trouble with emojis. About half of them look as if they signify “having trouble with a particularly difficult bowel movement” and I can’t imagine having a reason to put that in a posting.
On a brighter note perhaps they’re vampire egregores, something like an ideogrammatic baobhan sith. Perhaps every time one gets inserted into a message it also gets inserted into the life force of the writer and/or reader.
Grant Morrison writes about “Viral Sigils” in his “Pop Magic!” :“The logo or brand, like any sigil, is a condensation, a compressed, symbolic summing up of the world of desire which the corporation intends to represent. The logo is the only visible sign of the corporate intelligence seething behind it...They and other ghosts like them rule our world of the early 21st century”.
Seems settled then...

Eheu. It really requires a special degree of stupidity to bugger up your name not once but twice (the second time during the apology for the first)! I shall immediately seek a job on the Grauniad!
Once again, humble grovelling apologies with a side order of abject remorse...

Humble grovelling apologies for the slip of the finger! I was too busy foaming at the mouth to proofread...

Regarding O9A, wholehearted agreement! They are a bunch of coprophagic fuckwits that give me the boak (and that is genuinely the nicest thing I can think to say of them).

My subconscious/higher-self is remarkably good at presenting me with a plethora of manifestations, symbolic events and weird shit. Sadly it is also very good at obfuscation and being downright mysterious. The fact that it doesn’t seem to be wholly impressed with the received methods of seeking clarification (vide “Black Magic(k)” in your preferred text/grimoire/spell book/Book of Shadows) is “interesting” (as in profoundly frustrating). I can and do interpret intellectually but frankly I suspect half the point of the “weird shit” is to delineate the limitations of interpretation and rupture the state of knowing.  Opening any Gate initiates a liminal transitional period (a twilight of inchoate penumbra) during which certainties are dissolved, continuities become fluid, and futures become malleable. Heidegger crops up on the forum, but maybe his ill-served mentor Husserl serves here as a better psychopomp. Phenomenological observation after all strives to be rigorously "presuppositionless".

Science / Bees and Isolate Intelligence
« on: October 04, 2017, 01:35:45 pm »
Sadly this is the best source I could get for this story [Google Daily Mail for an explanation of my “Sadly”]: “Link between brain connections and cleverness in bees could shed light on differences in human intelligence”:
Reading the story made me ponder something I find difficult in our framing of “isolate intelligence”. I see “isolate intelligence” being used essentially as a synonym for the distinctiveness of “human intelligence”. This strikes me as inviting into our thinking the classic “god-of-the-gaps” fallacy []. If scientific research provides a comprehensive naturalistic explanation of the “uniqueness” of human intelligence where would that leave “isolate intelligence”?

The theory is fascinating but (reading the source you gave) it looks like it may be solely grounded in his Computer Science thinking (an area in which he is clearly something of a genius). It appears to me to be a thought experiment which could potentially be developed into a scientific theory. Equally, I’m not sure if this isn’t Mensch’s Linus Pauling vitamin C moment.
