Re: Does this belief system bring you peace?
Yessss, that's exactly right...the LHP sounds much harder, in terms of work one does on one's self, to reach enlightenment. Not unlike say Buddhism, although I know they are very different belief systems. That said, following a deity that promises you salvation if you do this...and this...and that...isn't easy either, but in a different way. It is disappointing to cry out to a god that you fear isn't listening. These fears coupled with the natural fears that we all experience as humans, can really mess with a person's head. When I was following Christianity, I made a lot of excuses for God, when things didn't go as planned in my life or I failed at something. It was never me looking at me, and what did I do wrong in the situation that I could learn from? It was always me blaming a god, or calling out to him for help. And feeling a sense of peace, because I didn't have to worry about it, anymore. God would take care of it all. And for a time that worked. But, you don't grow when religion becomes a crutch in your life, always catching your falls.

So, I read that Setians don't worship any being. Do you revere any particular being, though? Or is it mainly a set of principles that help you to become your best self?  (Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.)

Hey Deidre, now days I don't mind saying that yes, I do "worship" Set, but not in the traditional meaning of the word "worship".  I honor and revere Set as the supreme manifestation of the Prince of Darkness, the First Principle and giver of the Gift of Isolate Intelligence, that is the Black Flame.  However, I do not subjugate or surrender my own mind and will to him.  This would be sacrilege to the Setian Spirit.  Set does not seek mindless followers or servants, but rather equals to accompany and collaborate with him on the Path of Darkness.

When I first became Setian, the Dark Prince infused within me further of his own Essence, and the strength that is his also became my strength.  Therefore, when I encounter a challenge or stressful barrier in my life I need not call upon Set himself to take care of it for me.  I can look into my Self and know that I have been consecrated to Set and that his Strength is my own, and I can summon it, the Powers of Darkness, through the conduit of Greater Black Magic.

Re: Does this belief system bring you peace?
A few months later, I lost an online friend named Mequa, a few people here knew him. He used to post on RF. His death following my grandmother's death, just was so shocking.

I can relate to that experience, youre not the only one. Before I knew Setamontet, onyx, and Xepera ma Set within RF, I ran and partly lead some online Satanist groups. At that time when I re adopted the Church of Satans ideology I joined an online Church of Satan which was different from the actual organization itself. That online Organization had the same ideological viewpoints as the actual Church of Satan had.

When I quickly rose up within its hierarchical system I had an online friend as well who was a part of the priesthood of our group. She messaged me saying, "Thank you for everything." At first I thought that she literally meant that in which I had the wrong impression of what she was attempting to do by taking her own life away.

It was that time I recieved a message from one of her friends telling me that she attempted to commit suicide and that she was at the hospital. It was shocking for me to handle of what she tried to do.

My depression really started hitting me in middle school, it hit me hard. I never knew how it started, but Iv'e always felt like ending my own life as well. But I realized I never had the balls to end my life like this, and I started to have thoughts of perhaps the consequences on ending ones existence.

It was that moment I chose to battle my depression constantly. I still suffer a mild form of depression but it is not an extreme form of depression like it was in the past.

Re: Does this belief system bring you peace?
I like the idea of a temple experience, and then I don't. I think that would remind me of church gatherings, etc and I'd like to get away from theism. LHP doesn't seem like theism, but in some ways, it resembles it. But, there doesn't seem to be any set dogma per se, but there probably are still certain tenets that Setians hold true to the foundation of the belief system, which is fine. I mean, you have to have structure, or it wouldn't be a belief system.

I love that you say this is dictated by our own subjective journeys, and that is refreshing. I sound like I'm considering this, maybe I am, but I need to better understand the principle of 'darkness.' I think I do. It sounds like darkness represents our whole selves, we have areas of darkness ...but, in Christianity, the idea is that you should dispel the darkness and have nothing to do with it, for it could lead you to sin. I agree somewhat with that, in the sense that if we say have a gambling habit that causes us to be broke all the time, that would be a habit worth dispelling. So, just trying to understand how darkness fits into a person growing in enlightenment. I think I know, but not 100% sure.

Well UU is like LHP in that one aspect, it wouldn't be most other respects. They won't touch taboos unless it's just trying to make certain things not taboo anymore for example they really support the LGBT community. I don't like going there too often and as I said the services resemble Christianity too much for me. But I do like their events and other stuff. They are just really open minded and see everyone as on their own path which is what makes them good.

I'm not aware of any kind of temples that are LHP themselves though. I was mostly referring to normal Hindu temples.

However I mentioned Uniterian Universalist as your the kind of person that comes in there a lot and some decide to stay. As I said many different religions go there. They are a very accepting group of people with no dogma and just a few core principles that are mostly about being open and kind to all.

Re: Does this belief system bring you peace? I just recalled something but about death.. it has a beauty because it mirrors life. Without any death other stuff can't life. It's about balance ect

In a way we all die and are reborn throughout our spiritual journey. In many ways death is just the start of something new. But we often find that hard to accept because we don't like dying lol.

Which is good, at least, we shouldn't want to physically die or wish those we love to die. But sometimes it's necessary either metaphorically so we can become something better, or literally so the cycle of life can continue.

This is so interesting, and yet it had to also be a little scary? Unnerving?

My concern with labeling Satan as an actual entity, is that he is known as an actual entity in Christianity. Yet, he is known as an evil entity, one that wishes to hurt us, cause us to 'sin,' and so on. I need to read about this, to see why Christians have misunderstood Satan, in general.

Satan isn't in Christianity what it originally was to the ancient Hebrews and Christians adapted the idea over time.

Originally, when Satan was known as an entity and not a title, he was serving Yahweh to test those who would not stay faithful. He was an angel. In other contexts it could mean one who opposes, something that is in the way, or someone who accuses the other of wrong doing.

That's the short version. I need to write up something on it on my blog probably. I used to have a good summary on an abandoned site project from years ago so I might be able to rework that (assuming I can find my old sources).

Re: Does this belief system bring you peace? For me it's not about finding peace for it's own sake, but it can come as a side-effect of having the freedom to direct your own path. There is a responsibility that comes with it, in that there is nobody to blame for conscious choices made in error. But there are also no strings attached in terms of having to purchase "peace" through submission.

I find the greatest peace when I'm doing things I truly enjoy, especially those which define me as an individual.

Re: Hello :) Welcome @Deidre You are sparking quite the conversation in this forum. All very important questions and great responses. Your poem is also captivating as it encapsulated the dualist nature quite nicely. As Platonic forms, light and darkness may be represented since the earliest civilization as the Egyptian neteru Horus the Elder and Set respectively.

Hey, new member here! Hello, everyone!

I discovered this forum thanks to Three_Scarabs on reddit, and I'm happy that I did. It's such a shame there aren't that many LHP forums out there, especially with a non-dogmatic community. I've been into the occult for as long as I can remember, but only recently have I made my paradigm more specific. My paradigm consists of a mix of Hermeticism, Chaos Magick, Demonolatry (mainly Goetic, but I'm not using Solomonic methods), Ancient Egyptian tradition, and a bunch of other stuff. I used to be a Satanist, but then I took an interest into more ancient traditions, and in the process drifted away from Satanism almost entirely.

The approach I take towards magick leans more to the psychological model, with some spiritual elements.

Anyway, enough about me. It's really a pleasure to meet you all!
